Description
The actual account of the Allies' September 1944 attempt, code-named Operation Market Garden, to speed up the end of World War II by crossing Belgium and Holland and into Germany. It was intended for American airborne divisions to capture Eindhoven and Nijmegen, while a British airborne division supported by a Polish airborne brigade would capture Arnhem. Eventually, the British XXX Corps, which is land-based and advances from the southern British lines, would bolster them. Because the paratroopers could not be relieved if the Germans held or blasted the bridges, they were crucial to the mission. Arnhem was a bridge too far because of faulty intelligence, the arrogance of the Allied high command, and tenacious German resistance.
